Exodus 27

PLAN FOR THE ALTAR OF BURNT OFFERINGS

(27:1-8) These verses give a detailed description of the altar of burnt offerings. It was made of shittim wood, horns, and brass. The altar of burnt offerings was the first thing the Israelites saw as they entered the Tabernacle courtyard.  This is where sacrifices were continually made.

PLANS FOR THE COURTYARD

(27:9-19) These verses give detailed instructions for the courtyard of the Tabernacle. It contained linen, pillars, and brass sockets. The north, south, east, and west each had detailed instructions on how it should look and what should be used.

LIGHT FOR THE TABERNACLE

(27:20-21) These verses give instructions, telling the children to bring pure oil beaten for the light, so the lamp will always burn. Aaron and his sons shall order it from evening to morning. It shall be a statue forever for the generations of Israel.

MY OBSERVATION:

This chapter provides clear instructions for building the altar of burnt offerings and lists the materials used. This altar was significant because it was where sacrifices were continually made. This reminded them that they could only go to God through sacrifices, the only way their sins could be forgiven and taken away.

Today, Jesus is the sacrifice for our sins, and we should not seek after anything else. We do not have to worry about going to an altar and asking for forgiveness; all we have to do is invite Jesus into our hearts, ask for forgiveness, and trust that He is with us. We have to reverence Him and put all our confidence in Him. We have to go to God daily, asking for forgiveness and for Him to make us new.  When we cast all our care on Jesus, He will give us peace and rest.

Romans 10:9, “If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved”.

**Main Lesson of Exodus 27 — The Light of God’s Presence and the Power of Holy Order**

Exodus 27 focuses on the **construction of the bronze altar**, the **courtyard of the Tabernacle**, and the **lamps that were to burn continually**. The chapter begins with instructions for building the **altar of burnt offering**, made of acacia wood overlaid with bronze, symbolizing **judgment and atonement**—the place where sacrifices would be offered for the people’s sins. The surrounding courtyard represented a sacred boundary, marking the separation between the holy and the common, and reminding Israel that access to God required reverence and cleansing. At the end of the chapter, God commands the Israelites to provide **pure olive oil** for the lamps so that they might burn continually in the Tent of Meeting. This light was a sign of God’s constant presence and a reminder that His truth and holiness were never to be extinguished.

The main lesson of Exodus 27 is that **worship requires both order and continual devotion**. The altar teaches that forgiveness and fellowship with God come only through sacrifice—ultimately pointing to Jesus Christ, the perfect sacrifice for sin. The ever-burning lamp symbolizes the believer’s responsibility to maintain a steady flame of faith, prayer, and obedience before God. This chapter encourages us to keep the fire of worship alive, to guard the light of God’s presence in our hearts, and to live with reverent order that reflects His holiness. In every act of devotion, whether offering or light, we are reminded that God dwells where His people maintain both purity and passion.
