Exodus Chapter 17: Water From the Rock
This chapter shows God's unending mercy, provision, and protection in times of desperation and conflict. There is a challenging time for the Israelites as they leave the Desert of Sin and encamp at Rephidim. During this time they have a serious lack of water. In their time of thirst and desperation they start to grumble and it leads to a miraculous intervention from God. The Israelites also face a threat from the Amalekites but are victorious over them.
Crisis at Rephidim (Vs 1-3)
*The Israelites complain due to there being a lack of water at Rephidim.
(Rephidim, meaning rest or stay, is a location in the Sinai Peninsula where the Israelites camped during their exodus from Egypt)
God's Provision of Water(Vs 4-6)
*Moses is instructed by God to strike a rock, causing water to flow for the people
Doubting God's Presence (Vs 7)
*Moses names the place Massah and Meribah due to the people's quarreling and testing of the Lord.
Battle Against the Amalekites (Vs 8-13)
*The Amalekites attack and Joshua is chosen to lead the fight while Moses prays on the hilltop.
Victory and Remembrance (Vs 14-16)
*After their victory, God instructs Moses to write a reminder of His promise to blot out the memory of Amalek.
Observation and Takeaways:
-In our times of need, we can trust in God to provide for us
-God is great in mercy. His grace abounds and He makes provision, even in times of our doubts and grumbling
-There is power in us being obedient and prayerful
-God is always with us and His presence is not dependent on our situation
-It is good to support one another in prayer and encouragement during challenging times and spiritual battles
