Exodus Chapter 31: Moses Receives the Tablets
This chapter shows us how God equips and empowers His people to fulfill His divine purpose. As we go through our lives, may we always remember to uphold and honor that which is sacred. Especially the spiritual rest that is represented by the Sabbath, allowing God's hand to guide our own work. The sacred objects crafted by Bezalel and Oholiab remind us that our lives are also shaped and designed by our Creator, the Divine Craftsman.
Appointment of Bezalel and Oholiab (Vs 1-5)
*The Lord appoints Bezalel( son of Uri, the son of Hur of the tribe of Judah)and Oholiab( son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan )as the chief craftsmen for the construction of the sacred objects.
*This empowers them with divine skill, ability, and knowledge.
Divine Commandments for Craftsmanship (Vs 6-11)
*They are commanded to create the Tent of Meeting, the ark of the Testimony, the mercy seat, and other furnishings.
*They were also commanded to create the holy garments and anointing oil and incense.
The Importance of the Sabbath (Vs 12-17)
*The Lord emphasizes the importance of keeping the Sabbath as a sign of the covenant and day of complete rest.
*The Lord warns of the consequences of violating the Sabbath.

**Main Lesson of Exodus 31 — God Equips and Commands His People for Holy Work**
Exodus 31 highlights how God not only gives instructions for His purposes but also provides the people and the power to fulfill them. In this chapter, God appoints **Bezalel** and **Oholiab** to oversee the construction of the Tabernacle. He fills them with His **Spirit, wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and skill** to create the sacred objects that would reflect His glory. This reveals that craftsmanship, artistry, and practical labor can be just as anointed and holy as preaching or prayer when they are done in obedience to God. Every detail of their work was meant to create a dwelling place for His presence among the people, showing that God values excellence and obedience in both spiritual and physical work.
The chapter concludes with God reaffirming the **Sabbath command**, reminding Israel that even holy work must pause for holy rest. The Sabbath serves as a covenant sign between God and His people—a reminder that He is their Creator and sanctifier. The main lesson of Exodus 31 is that God equips His people for every assignment He gives, empowering them through His Spirit to carry out divine purposes with excellence. It also teaches that obedience includes not only doing God’s work but also respecting His rhythm of rest. This balance between anointed work and sacred rest ensures that our service remains rooted in relationship, not performance, and that everything we build ultimately honors Him.
