Psalm 58
THEME: A PRAYER FOR GOD’S JUSTICE
(58:1-5),
David cried out so intensely for justice. He asked the rulers if they said what was right. He told them how wicked they are and how they like to think of evil. He told them how, in every land, they made things evil. He said that wicked people do wrong things from birth, and they tell lies as soon as they are born. They do not listen to people, and they hurt people.
(58:9-11),
This is a call for revenge. David fervently calls for justice they would judgment. Broken teeth and smashed jaws give way to God’s people wading in the blood of the wicked. These words convey ugly pictures of the consequences of sin. Even ugly pictures of darkness are often revealed by our own demands for justice. David expresses that if the wicked are punished, then everyone will say that, indeed, there is a reward for those who live for God.
MY OBSERVATION:
In this chapter, David accused rulers of injustice and violence and expressed trust in the certainty of God’s judgment. David used shocking images to describe his outrage at the injustice he observed from Israel’s rulers. David knew that one day, God would judge the wicked.
We can be grateful that God hears our prayer prayers, but we also can be thankful that God answers our requests with mercy.
The life application commentary says when earth judges are corrupt. People have little hope of justice in this life. But God loves justice and those who obey him with spares, perfect justice, and eternity.
