Psalm 77:1-2
King David cried out to God for help; hear me oh Lord. My distress has me seeking the Lord. During the night my outstretched hand would not be comforted.
Psalm 77:3-9
Through my groans, I remembered you, Lord. Even though I meditated my spirit was still weakened. My eyes did not close as my speech was overtaken by my troubles. Thoughts of days and years long ago took over my mind as I remembered songs during the night and asked: Will God reject me forever; will I never again have his favor? Has his unfailing love vanished forever from me? Has his promise failed me for all time? Has God forgotten that He is merciful withholding His compassion because of His anger?
Psalm 77:10-12
My thinking led me to appeal to God whose outstretched right hand is always near. You will be remembered for your good deeds, dear Lord; yes, I will remember the miracles you performed years ago. All of your works will be considered as I continue to meditate on your mighty deeds, dear God.
Psalm 77:13-16
God, your ways are holy. There is no other god as great as our God. You are the God who performs miracles displaying your power among your people. Your mighty arm redeems your people the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.
Psalm 77:17-20
Even the waters saw you, God and writhed (make continual twisting, squirming movements or contortions of the body), the depths of which convulsed (to suffer involuntary contraction of the muscles, producing contortion of the body or limbs). The clouds poured down water. Your arrows flashed back and forth through the sky while the heavens roared with thunder. The thunder could be heard in the whirlwind as the lightning lit up the entire world as the earth trembled and quaked. You led a path straight through the sea making your way through the mighty waters, yet your footprints could not be seen. By the hand of Moses and Aaron, you led your people through the flock.
My Overview and Observation
This psalm is one of David’s laments during which he expresses a deep sense of despair and torment from his struggles and doubts. He ultimately finds God’s loving hand of solace and hope awaiting him as he remembered all of the great things God had already done in his life. While he initially feels abandoned by God, questioning if His promises of help will ever be upon him again. His troubles have overtaken him to the point of restlessness and mistrust, feeling as if God has forgotten His promises. As with us, when we feel this way, if we will allow our minds to shift into a season of remembrance of all God has already done for us, we will be comforted and given hope. Renewed trust and hope always comes when we remember what God has already done and know that if He did it before, He will do it again. This psalm is an example of how to cope when you find your hope and trust diminished. Remembering that the same God who has delivered in the past is more than capable of delivering in your life again. Glory Be to God, Amen!
