PSALM 56 (NIV)
For the director of music. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” Of David. A miktam.[b] When the Philistines had seized him in Gath.
Psalm 56 is a psalm of David that is called a miktam. "Miktam" is a Hebrew word of uncertain meaning found in the titles of six of the psalms attributed to David, (Psalms 16, 56-60). These potentially signifies a type of musical or liturgical term, possibly indicating a "golden" or "precious" composition or a "mystery". These psalms often reflect David's experiences during times of distress or danger, showcasing his trust in God amidst adversity.
Psalm 56:1-2
God have mercy on me as my enemies are in hot pursuit against me, all day long. They press their way on the attack pursuing me all day long with pride.
Psalm 56:3-4
When my fear creeps in, in you, God, I put my trust. I sing praises to you for your word and when I trust in you, I am not afraid. There is nothing mere mortals can do to me when I trust in you.
Psalm 56:5-7
They falsely twist my words and their schemes are for my ruin. They conspire, lurk and are watchful of my every step hoping they will be able to take my life. God, as they are so wicked against me, do not let them get away and escape your anger. Bring their nations down!
Psalm 56:8-9
Keep a record of my misery, listing my tears on a scroll. My enemies will then be forced to turn back when I call on you, dear God for help, knowing that you along are for me.
Psalm 56:10-11God I praise you for your word and I trust in you and are not afraid. There is nothing man can do to me when I trust in you.
Psalm 56:12-13
My vows are to you, my God and I will present to you my thankful offerings as you have delivered me from death. You kept my feet from stumbling so that I may walk upright before you, my God, in the glorious light of life.
OVERVIEW AND OBSERVATIONS
This psalm, as the other 5 that are considered to be David’s miktam, is a psalm of confidence as he requests that God keep him from his enemies. He pleads with God not only to protect him but to punish them for their wickedness against him. David is confident that God will save him from the snares of his enemies and avenge him before all people. David promises to always sing God’s glory for the many things he has done and the ways that he continues to guide and protect him. This psalm is of value to us as we are reminded of just how faithful God is towards those that love Him and are called by Him for fruitful living. Trusting in God when we are afraid helps to calm us and focus on God and not our issues or problems. I am often reminded of what I heard Joyce Meyer’s say years ago, ‘some things you must just do afraid, knowing that God will fight your battles and promises to calm your fears. I thank God for David’s constant reminders to trust God. No matter what it looks like or how it may seem, God still sits on the throne and is concerned about everything we are concerned about. Aren’t you glad about it!! To God be the Glory, Amen.
Amen Sis. Kim!! Yes I am so glad God still sit on the throne and He is concerned about me!! Knowing this give me so much peace even when all things around me feel like they are falling apart. Thank you Jesus! 🙌🏽
